Introduction

Leeds, West Yorkshire, England is home to the redbrick University of Leeds. It integrated the Leeds School of Medicine and joined University College Liverpool, Owens College, and the federal Victoria University under the names Yorkshire College of Science and Yorkshire College, respectively. Owens College later changed its name to the University of Manchester (which became the University of Liverpool). King Edward VII handed a royal charter to the University of Leeds in 1904, which had been established in 1903. The institution enrolls about 33,500 students, which ranks as the eighth-highest enrollment among all UK universities. The university has routinely placed second in the UK for the volume of applications received since 2006, trailing only the University of Manchester. Leeds earned £547.3 million overall in 2010–11, of which £124 million came from grants and contracts for scientific research. The institution has £49.3 million in financial endowments (2009–2010), placing it outside the top ten British universities in terms of endowment. The university was a founding member of the N8 Group for Research Collaboration, the Worldwide Universities Network, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the European University Association, the White Rose University Consortium, the Santander Network, and CDIO. It is also a member of the Association of MBAs, EQUIS, and Universities UK. According to Times Higher Education, Leeds is between 19th and 28th in the country (The Guardian). According to the 2014 QS World University Rankings, the university is placed 97th overall and as the 41st best in Europe (2014 ARWU).
