Introduction

The University of St Andrews is a public research university in St Andrews, Fife, Scotland (also known as St Andrews University or just St Andrews; abbreviated as St And, from the Latin Sancti Andreae, in post-nominals). It is the third-oldest institution in the English-speaking world and the oldest of Scotland's four ancient universities (following Oxford and Cambridge). When the Avignon Antipope Benedict XIII issued a papal bull to a tiny founding group of Augustinian clergy, St Andrews was established between 1410 and 1413. St Andrews is made up of a number of institutions, including 18 academic schools arranged into four faculties and three constituent colleges (United College, St Mary's College, and St Leonard's College). The institution is housed in both old and new structures spread out around the city. Martinmas and Candlemas are the two terms that make up the academic year. Over one-third of the people living in the town during the academic year are either university employees or students. The student body is remarkably diverse: more than 45% of its admissions come from more than 100 countries outside of the UK, with roughly 1/8 of the students from the rest of the EU and the remaining 1/3 from abroad, with 15% from North America alone. The student body is renowned for upholding centuries-old customs including Raisin Weekend, May Dip, and the wearing of distinctive academic attire, while the university's sports teams compete in BUCS events. In the UK, it is ranked behind Oxbridge as the third-best institution. The Schools of Physics and Astronomy, International Relations, Computer Science, Geography, and Mathematics are ranked top in the UK by The Guardian, whilst Divinity and Middle Eastern and African Studies are ranked first by The Complete University Guide. St Andrews is ranked among the Top 20 Arts and Humanities Universities in the World by the Times Higher Education World Universities Ranking. Out of the multi-faculty universities in the UK, St Andrews has the greatest student satisfaction (equal first).
