Introduction

A huge, open green field site on the South Downs in East Sussex is home to the public research institution known as the University of Sussex. It can be found on the outskirts of Brighton and Hove. The university, which takes its name from the ancient county of Sussex, was granted a Royal Charter in August 1961. The 1994 Group of research-intensive universities supporting excellence in teaching and research was founded with Sussex as a founding member. Three Nobel laureates, 14 Fellows of the Royal Society, six Fellows of the British Academy, and a Crafoord Prize winner are among the faculty at Sussex. According to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2014–15, the university is now placed 111th globally and 14th in the UK. The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2015 rates Sussex 25th, whereas The Guardian University Guide 2016 puts Sussex 19th. The University was ranked in the top 151-200 globally and in the top 18-20 in the United Kingdom by the 2014 Academic Ranking of World Universities.
