Introduction

Ealing and Brentford in London, Reading and Slough in Berkshire, and the University of West London are all public universities in the United Kingdom. The Lady Byron School, which eventually evolved into Ealing College of Higher Education, was established in 1860, marking the beginning of the institution. The Polytechnic of West London was created in 1990 through the merger of the Ealing College of Higher Education, Thames Valley College of Higher Education, Queen Charlotte's College of Health Care Studies, and the London College of Music. The Polytechnic of West London changed its name to Thames Valley University in 1992 and became a university. Thames Valley and Reading College and School of Arts and Design combined in 2004. In 2010, an old facility in Slough was shut down. In order to reflect a concentration of operations on its Ealing and Brentford campuses, the university announced in August 2010 that it had been given permission to alter its name to the University of West London. On April 6, 2011, the new name was formally adopted.
