Introduction

A public research university in Amsterdam, the Netherlands is known as the University of Amsterdam (abbreviated as UvA; Dutch: Universiteit van Amsterdam). The UvA and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam are the two major, publicly supported research universities in the city (VU). The University of Amsterdam is the third-oldest university in the Netherlands. It was founded in 1632 by local authorities and afterwards given the name of the city of Amsterdam. With 31,186 students, 4,794 employees, 1,340 PhD students, and a €600 million annual budget, it is one of the biggest research universities in Europe. In terms of enrollment, it is the biggest university in the Netherlands. A few colleges are housed in other municipalities, but the main campus is situated in the heart of Amsterdam. The university is organised into seven faculties: Humanities, Social and Behavioural Sciences, Economics and Business, Science, Law, Medicine, Dentistry.
