Introduction

The Institution of Law (ULaw), originally known as the College of Law, is a private, for-profit university in the United Kingdom that offers continuing legal education programs, specialized legal training, and law degrees to British barristers and lawyers. It is the largest law school in the UK and was established in 1962 as the College of Law. The College of Law received authorization to confer degrees in 2006, and it was the first for-profit educational institution in the UK to receive university status in 2012. Eight ULaw locations may be found in England.

Prior to receiving university status in 2012, the College of Law's educational and training business was divided off and incorporated as a private limited company. The College of Law had been established by royal charter as a charity in 1975. The College of Law Ltd. and eventually the University of Law Ltd. were born out of this. The 1975 royal charter preserved the charitable branch, which changed its name to the Legal Education Foundation. Montagu Private Equity acquired College of Law Ltd. soon after it received university status in 2012. Three years later, Montagu sold the University of Law to its current owner, Global University Systems, a business based in the Netherlands.
