Introduction

One of the two public institutions in the Scottish city of Dundee is Abertay University. The University of Dundee is the other. A bequest was made in 1872 by Sir David Baxter, 1st Baronet of Kilmaron, towards the construction of a mechanics' institute in Dundee. It was one of the first to be declared a central institution, analogous to a "industry university," and the Scottish Education Department recognized it as an educational centre as early as 1902. It still has a strong vocational emphasis and is linked to Dundee's development as a hub for video games. Abertay was the first college in the UK to receive recognition as a Center for Excellence in Computer Games and the first university in the entire world to offer a degree in computer games education. It created and still hosts the international competition for students studying computer games, "Dare to be Digital," in 1999. Beginning in 2006, Abertay was also the first institution to provide a degree in ethical hacking and countermeasures. The Research Excellence Framework 2014 (REF2014) results, which were released on December 18th, indicated that Abertay was the top-ranked contemporary institution in Scotland for "research intensity." Abertay University is one of the top 25 universities in the world to study video game creation, according to the Princetown Review 2015.
