Introduction

A recently founded British university in the city of Birmingham, England, is known as Birmingham City University (abbreviated as BCU; previously known as Birmingham Polytechnic and the University of Central England in Birmingham). The other four are Aston University, University of Birmingham, University College Birmingham, and Newman University. It is the second-largest of the city's five universities. According to the Complete University Guide, it is the third-highest ranked of the five universities in Birmingham, after the University of Birmingham and Aston University. It was first founded in 1843 as the Birmingham College of Art. In 1971, it was recognized as a polytechnic, and in 1992, it was granted university status. The university has three main sites that serve four colleges. It also provides courses in business, the performing arts, social sciences, technology, engineering, education, and the built environment. A £125 million addition to its campus in the heart of Birmingham is opening in two phases; the first phase debuted in 2013. It is a component of the Eastside development of a new technology and learning quarter. The college belongs to the New Universities with a million or more students group. A significant portion of the West Midlands' full-time students—roughly half—come from racial and ethnic minorities. The institution enrolls the most international students in the Birmingham area and offers access and foundation programs through a global network of affiliated universities and schools of higher education.
