Introduction

Regent's College London, a tiny private non-profit institution founded in 1984 and situated in London, United Kingdom, was given taught-degree conferring status in 2012–2013. It is one of four private universities in the nation (and one of two nonprofits), and it is one of six private universities in the United Kingdom that have been given the authority to award taught degrees. With 15% of applicants from the UK, 10% from the US, and the remaining candidates from all over the world, the university is the most international of all UK universities[citation needed]. The university's main campus is in London's Regent's Park. It was constructed on the site of South Villa, one of the original eight Regent's Park villas, and is one of the two largest sets of buildings in the park, together with the London Zoo. RUL is one of the eight founding members of the Independent Universities Group, whose goal is to set itself apart academically from the alternative sector's more for-profit components[citation needed]. The Illinois-based liberal arts college Rockford College leased the South Villa Estate in Regent's Park in 1984 to serve as the campus for the newly founded Regent's College, a higher education institution whose main goal was to offer study abroad opportunities to American students. The former Bedford College campus in Regent's Park was purchased by Regent's College in 1985. Bedford College leased the property in 1908, and Queen Mary officially unveiled a new set of structures created by architect Basil Champneys in 1913. Over time, the buildings underwent modifications and additions, particularly following bomb damage from the Second World War. In 1985, Bedford College and Royal Holloway College (another college of the University of London) combined, and Bedford College left its location in Regent's Park and relocated to Royal Holloway's site in Egham, Surrey. The European Business School London relocated to the Regent's College campus in 1987 as the college continued to grow. It was announced in July 2012 that Regent's College had received taught degree-awarding capabilities (TDAP) effective September 1, 2012. In the UK, there are approximately 150 "recognized bodies," or institutions with the authority to issue degrees. American InterContinental University London will be acquired by Regent's College from Career Education Corporation as of February 2013. Regent's College completed the requirements to become a university, according to a March 2013 announcement from the UK's Department for Business Innovation and Skills.
