Introduction

In the Scottish city of Aberdeen, there is a public institution called Robert Gordon University, or RGU for short. It was founded in the 18th century by Robert Gordon, a wealthy merchant from Aberdeen, and evolved from a number of institutions that offered technical and adult education in the 19th and early 20th centuries before becoming a university in 1992. One of the city's two universities is this one (the other is the much older University of Aberdeen). The only RGU campus in Aberdeen is in Garthdee, which is located in the city's south-west suburbs amidst parks on the banks of the River Dee. The university also runs an administrative building at Schoolhill in the heart of Aberdeen. A second campus that was situated nearby at St. Andrew Street and here until the summer of 2013 has now closed, save for the Administration Building, which will be kept. On the main Garthdee campus, the academic departments that were there have relocated to new structures.
