Introduction

A constituent college of the federal University of London, Royal Holloway, University of London was initially established as Royal Holloway and Bedford New College. It is a public research university. There are around 8,600 undergraduate and graduate students from more than 100 countries enrolled in its three faculties and 19 academic divisions. The campus is located in the Greater London Urban Area, close to Egham, Surrey, but outside the M25 and around 19 miles (31 km) from the geographic center of London. Thomas Holloway, a Victorian businessman and philanthropist, founded the Egham campus in 1879. As an all-women college, Royal Holloway College was formally inaugurated by Queen Victoria in 1886. In 1900, it enrolled as a student at the University of London. The college began accepted male postgraduate students in 1945, and approximately 100 of the first male undergraduates were admitted in 1965. Royal Holloway and Bedford Institution, another former all-college women's in London that was established in 1849, joined the University of London in 1900, and transitioned to full co-education in 1965, united in 1985. The combined college was given the name Royal Holloway and Bedford New College (RHBNC), which is still the institution's legally recognized name as registered under an Act of Parliament. The Founder's Building, a Grade I listed red-brick structure based on the Château de Chambord in the French Loire Valley, dominates the site. https://www.royalholloway.ac.uk/studying-here/international-students/english-language-requirements/pre-sessional-english-language-programmes/
