Introduction

In Gloucestershire, England, there is a public institution called the University of Gloucestershire. It is spread across three campuses, Francis Close Hall, Park, and Oxstalls, two of which are in Cheltenham and one of which is in Gloucester. The Mechanics' Institute of 1834 and the Cheltenham Training College, founded in 1874 by the Reverend Francis Close, are where the university's origins may be traced. Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education received university status in October 2001. The university's three faculties—Media, Arts and Technology, Business Education and Professional Studies, and Applied Sciences—offer more than 120 undergraduate courses and about 70 taught post-graduate courses. The university, Gloucestershire College, South Gloucestershire College, and Stroud College have a 10-year Memorandum of Understanding that supports access to higher education.
