Introduction
The development of mechanics institutes in the 19th century, which offered general and vocational education to working men, is where the University of Wolverhampton had its start. In Wolverhampton, technical, scientific, commercial, and general classes were developed in the Free Library (1870), whilst the Municipal School for Art was built in new buildings by 1885 from a School of Art founded in 1851. We had classes in pattern making, house painting, and coach construction by 1903. To "prized" pupils, "student scholarships" were being provided by 1905. The University is now a leading global supplier of entrepreneurial education after more than 180 years of forging education for all.
